The Chandogyopanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads like Brihadaranyakopanishad. Belonging to Samaveda, this upanishad is actually the extension of Chandogya Brahmana consisting of ten chapters. The last eight chapters of this Brahmana constitute this Upanishad. These eight chapters contain 630 passages in prose. This way the upanishad is large in size and is also very important content-wise. It has contributed material to the most popular orthodox system of philosophy named the Vedanta. Vedanta literally means the end of the Veda. But philosophically it expresses the sense of the highest purpose of Veda. The Upanishads generally deal with the questions regarding the origin of the world, the search for truth and the way to realization of Ultimate Reality. The Chandogyopanishad also presents the metaphysical speculations of the seers of that age. The treatise starts with the explanation of the mystic syllable Om. It also contains methods of meditation on this symbol, meditation on Sama, the Madhuvidya and the principle of rebirth. Because of the importance of its contents it has been commented by Shankaracarya and others. This upanishad presents various dimensions of one ultimate Reality. Its realization by moral conduct, spiritual discipline and spiritual knowledge can fulfil our existence with infinite bliss. This ancient Upanishad has to offer much more which stands relevant even in this new age of 21st century.
